In this area you will discover the ancient past of empires, Khmer and the French, see many different minority groups who have their own languages and lifestyles and cycle through some of the most beautiful and quite challenging scenery in South East Asia. By cycling, you’ll be experiencing the life and soul of the region and integrating with nature throughout your journey of Southern LaosDay 1: Pakse – Champasak (60Km) (L/D) We start the day heading out of Pakse, riding south to Ban Muang, a little known town on the banks of the Mekong River. Here we cross over the river and explore the stunning Island of Don Daeng stopping to enjoy a picnic lunch. Then, we head back over the Mekong River and cycle to the town of Champasak to spend the afternoon cycling around Wat Phu a Khmer Hindu temple complex which dates back to the 5th Century. Today it is recognised as a UNESCO world Heritage site and is the location for the ancient city of Shestrapura.  Finally we head to our hotel for an evening of relaxation.Day 2: Champasak – Don Khong (40KM) (B/L/D) From Champasak, we continue cycling South on flat terrain heading for the town of Ban Kiet Ngong, near to the Xe Xiam National Park this area is filled with densely populated forests and beautiful valleys. We stop here to take a delightful walk up to visit the temple mount of Phu Asa a historic archaeological site where we spend lunch. Then we continue to cycle to our pick up point for our transfer to Don Khong the largest of the well-known 4000 Islands of the Mekong. Rest of the day is at Leisure to relax at our hotelDay 3: Don Khong – Don Khone (55Km) (B/L/D) Today is all about discovering and exploring nature, in this wonderful tranquil setting and one of the highlights of this trip, cycling through the 4000 Islands hopping on small ferries the short distance from one Island to the other, cycle through the peaceful and un-touristic Island of Don Som to its southern tip which is just a couple of hundred metres from Don Det. Cycle through Don Det and along the old railway line and across the stunning French Railway bridge to Don Khone and continue to the Southern tip of Don Khone. Here you can see Cambodia just across the river. Take a boat ride into Cambodian waters to search for the endangered Irrawaddy dolphins that live in this part of the Mekong. Next we head towards the beautiful Liphi falls before finishing cycling for the day with a short ride to your bungalow on Don Khone Island.Day 4: Don Khone – Khon Pha Peng – Tad Fane (B/L/D) Start our day by crossing over the river and heading south riding to the fascinating Khan Phapeng waterfalls, known as the Niagara of the East and the largest in South East Asia, these natural falls of nature divide the Mekong River providing a magnificent site near to the Cambodian border. From here transfer one and a half hours drive up into the coffee and tea growing area of Laos, better known as the Bolaven Plateau a volcanically rich fertile land. Then we continue cycling north towards Pakse before climbing into the temperate coffee climate growing area well known for its Arabica and Robusta beans. These beans fetch some of the highest coffee prices around the world today and provide an excellent source of income for the local community. The road undulates, has a definite upward feeling, however it is of a gentle riding nature and a welcome challenge from the predominately flat lands over the past few days. As we climb we pass through an abundance of coffee plantations before arriving at the wonderful Tad Fane resort which overlooks the stunning Tad Fane falls with its two stunning cascades, framed against the Bolaven Plateau. For those with a little more energy talk a walk or cycle to the nearby Tad Yuang falls where you can swim and relax those tired muscles in the cool waters.Day 5 – Bolaven Plateau – Tad Lo (73Km) (B/L/D) Today we ride more than 70 km to Tad Lo, and though there is a gentle climb of about 15 km, you won’t even notice as you take in the lush countryside and the great views of the surrounding mountains. After the climb you are pleasantly rewarded for your efforts with a fantastic 900m descent. Most of this section is tarmac but there is a section of around 19 km where we are on red dirt roads. The road undulates slightly before we arrive at the Tad Lo Lodge with front row views across the waterfalls. This superb lodge is a stone’s throw from the minor falls of Ted Hung and if you wake early enough you might catch elephants making their way into the waterfalls for their morning bath. We have an alfresco dining experience this evening overlooking the falls to round off a great day.Day 6 – Tad Lo (B) Today you are free to relax and enjoy this wonderful area and hotel. Tad Lo is in an area of outstanding natural beauty and if you’re feeling active we recommend you consider sunbathing and swim at the falls, elephant riding through the nearby forest or take a short trip to see the Katu ethnic village at Lao Ngam. The Katu are famous in the region for their weaving skills, using foot looms or do a 20 km cycles ride around the area. Your guide will be able to advise you on the routing to take and points of interest.Day 7 – Tad Lo – Pakse (92Km) (B/L) Our final day is an exhilarating ride as we leave the Bolaven Plateau behind cycling on undulating roads with climbs and descents throughout. – Some climbs are lengthy but gradual; one is 5 km, and another 14km. We then head downhill all the way into Pakse arriving mid to late afternoon. For those continuing on, transfers will be arranged to Pakse Airport or across the border into Thailand, to Ubon Ratchathani and a flight to Bangkok. Alternatively overnight in Pakse and then continue your journey.Hotels (As a Guide Only) – subject to availability
