Tour ItineraryKochi – Munnar – Periyar – Kumarakom – Alleppey – KochiDAY 01:ARRIVE KOCHI (Cochin) Arrive Kochi airport late this morning or afternoon. Met on arrival at the airport and transferred to the hotel for check in. The rest of the day is free for independent activities. Overnight, stay at the hotel.Day 02:IN KOCHI Have breakfast at the hotel before you leave for your half day city tour of Cochin. Kochi is also known as ‘Queen of the Arabian Sea’ due to its natural harbour being one of the finest. Cochin is a city made of islands connected to Ernakulam on the mainland by bridges and ferries. The interesting city of Cochin, perfectly reflect the eclecticism of Kerala. This quaint town has seen historic visits from sea faring traders in the past from Portugal, China etc bringing to it different cultures that make up its fabric.Today visit the Jewish Synagogue (of 1568) which is the oldest synagogue in the commonwealth. It is an interesting little place with hand painted willow pattern floor tiles brought from Canton in China in the mid 18th century. The synagogue is located in an area called Jew Town which also is one of the centres of the spice trade in the region. Also visit the ancient Mattancherry (Dutch) Palace built by the Portuguese in 1557. This palace was presented to the ruler of Cochin as a gesture of goodwill. The Palace’s alternative name “Dutch Palace” resulted from substantial renovations by the Dutch after 1663. The most important feature of the palace is the astonishing murals that adorn some of the palace rooms, depicting scenes from the Ramayana, Mahabharta and Puranic legends connected with Shiva, Vishnu, Krishna, Kumara and Durga. Another stop is made at the St. Francis Church, the oldest European built church in India. The church was constructed in 1503 by the Portuguese Franciscan Friars who accompanied the expedition led by Pedro Alvarez Cabral. Vasco de Gama, the first European to reach India by sailing around Africa, died in Cochin in 1524 and was buried here for 14 years before his remains were transferred to Lisbon. His tombstone can be seen inside the church. Also pay a visit to the amazing Chinese fishing nets operating on principles of physics advanced for their times. Top off the day by a cruise around Cochin harbour during Sunset.This evening learn about Kerala’s fascinating art from, Kathakali. The Kathakali performers begin to train for their art at a young age, and their study continues for a lifetime. Today you will enjoy a dance performance. Return to your hotel for an overnight’s stay.DAY 03: KOCHI – MUNNAR (approx. 4-5 hr drive) After breakfast at the hotel drive to Munnar. Arrive in Munnar and check into the hotel. In the afternoon leave the hotel for a half day city tour. Return to the hotel for overnight stay.DAY 04: MUNNAR After breakfast proceed to see Tea Gardens around Munnar. Evening is free for independent activities. Overnight, stay at the hotel. DAY 05: MUNNAR – PERIYAR (approx. 5 hr dive). After breakfast drive to Periyar and check into the hotel on arrival. Located on the Tamil Nadu and Kerala border this region is known as the Spice Village of India for its vast spice and tea gardens. The road winds through mountains, descending through a carpet of tea bushes, estates of tall rubber trees and gardens of coffee, cardamom and pepper. The aroma from the spices fills the air. Upon arrival in Thekkady (Periyar) you will check in to your resort. The Resort is located on the fringes of the Periyar Game Preserve.Periyar Wildlife Park This unique wildlife sanctuary (about 300 square miles) is the pride of Kerala and a testimony to nature’s splendour and human innovation. The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is centred on an artificial lake at Thekkady and fed by the Periyar River. Here the high ranges of the Western Ghats are clothed in dense evergreen, moist deciduous forests and savannah grasslands. Below this thick green canopy roam herds of elephants, sambar deer, tigers, gaurs, lion tailed macaques and Nilgiri Langurs monkeys. This evening is free for independent activities. Overnight, stay at the hotel.DAY 06: IN PERIYAR Early morning leave the hotel for a park visit by boat with the naturalist to see wild life. Return to the hotel later on for breakfast. After breakfast proceed for spice plantation visit around Periyar. Overnight, stay at the hotel.DAY 07: PERIYAR – KUMARAKOM (approx. 4-5 hr drive) After breakfast drive to Kumarakom. The state of Kerala, apart from being the one of the most progressive states in the nation is also known for its numerous canals and waterways and its verdant forests and mangrove swamps. Set in one of the most idyllic locations in Kerala, Kumarakom is a tiny settlement, nestled in the backwaters of Kerala and evokes images of Kashmir.When you arrive check into the hotel. The rest of the evening is free to relax in the hotel or for Ayurveda Treatment (not included). After breakfast you have a full day free to relax in the hotel or free for Ayurveda treatment (not included).Day 09: KUMARAKOM – ALLEPPEY After breakfast proceed to embark the houseboat and cruise through narrow lakes and canals towards Alleppey. Full day is free to enjoy backwaters on board. Enjoy lunch, dinner and overnight on board.Day 10: ALLEPPEY – COCHIN (approx. 1½ hours drive) After breakfast on board drive to Cochin. When you arrive check into your hotel. The rest day is free to explore Cochin on your own.
